I've heard locktabs aren't what they once were.  Is it best to use Loctite in place of all of them?

I mean a locktab for the clutch housing fixing nuts is a different kettle of fish to a locktab for the flywheel bolt.

I still use lock washers on the crank bolt, cam nut, pinion nut, mainshaft bearing retainer & input shaft nut. Everything else gets thread lock, nylocs or spring washers.

I moved over to Nord-Lock and loctite some years ago.

I do both on anything I can't access when it's all together.

In the Flywheel housing, I stopped using locktabs long ago. I have found them, for most things that they are fitted, too soft, but to be honest, in here, they would be OK as the nuts aren't done up that tight.

I stopped as I didn't see the sense in fitting those. There's half a dozen external nuts and 3 bolts. I've never seen any of those come loose - ever. In the 20+ years of not using these locktabs, I've not had an issue from doing so. The later cars that used flanged bolts didn't have locktabs here.

I only fit spring washers here.

The others that I feel are best avoided are those in the high torque setting critical fasteners, like Main Bearing and Big End Caps, Flywheel, Harmonic Damper, Cam Nut and others. They are too soft and oooze out over time.

What about the ones in the gearbox and the balljoint ones?

What about the ones in the gearbox and the balljoint ones?

None in the Gearbox.

The Ball Joint ones I do fit. They seem big enough that the spot loading is only small and I haven't found an issue with the oooozing like the Mains, Flywheel and other engine ones.

None the less, I rely on Loctite for holding the Nut on the Ball Joint tight and only use the Locktab as a tell-tale so I can easily see if it's working loose. It also saves me from finding another 40 thou of shims.

A further question:  is Loctite 243 or 2400 sufficient for all these applications?

I've been Using 243. It's a medium grade.
