Steering Column Ignition

Best Answer unburntfuelinthemorning , 28 May 2019 - 08:13 AM

I don't know if the steering lock would fit onto the old steering column.  The steering lock clamps to the steering column so the diameter of the column needs to be correct.  It might fit.

The wiring part is easy.  The ignition switch is at the bottom of the lock barrel and you just wire it in accordingly.

Alternatively why not move your existing switch from the middle of the car a more convienient position.

Hey guys new to the mini scene and don't know too much about the electrical side of things. I've got a 75 clubman and the ignition barrel is in the centre of the dash and it's annoying to climb in and out of the car when working on the engine. I was wondering is it possible to just buy a new steering column mounted ignition barrel and just wire it up and it'll work? Also if it is possible would it add steering lock as well? Thanks

You'll need the later inner and outer steering column too and yes it would add a steering lock.

OK so if I was just to put the ignition barrel on the steering column without worrying about the steering lock would I need to change the column still? Or is it a case of if you put it on the column you have to change to the later type column regardless? And wiring wise is just plug and play?

If it's to start the engine while working in the engine bay why not fit the starter button I think early cars used to have there?

I suppose I didn't think of that. It's a really good idea though I could dash mount it near the driver's door. Will look at the options. Thanks

The ignition switch is operated by the steering lock so you may as well use an alternative switch if you don't fit the lock.

It'd affect the whole column - The lock needs the matching inner column to lock. You could probably modify the outer but you'd need a cowl with the extra room for the lock so it'd be a lot simpler to find a complete column 2nd hand. The MK3 steering locks are hard to find, the later ones will also add a wiper stalk to your modifications.

If it's a UK car they got steering locks around 1970, so something sounds a bit off.

Both UK & Australian CKD clubmans were assembled in New Zealand (at Petone & Panmure) but with some locally manufactured content.

I know Australian clubmans didn't start to fit steering/ignition locks untill some time after March 1973 (no idea when), & that the 1974 Brochure for Seneffe built Minis show switch panel mounted ignition switches so chances are it's probably kosher.
