I have a 1985 mini Mayfair and I'm having issues getting it into gear.

I'm not sure what type of clutch I have (verto or pre/verto), I understand there might be someway of adjusting it though. I think the whole thing is knackered because it's near 30 years old but I don't really want to replace it because I'm saving up for a 1275 and would rather throw my money away at that

Currently the engine that's in there is a 998 with a single carburetor, fairly certain the one it came with.

The symptoms are:

- The pedal feels looser than usual

- doesn't actually engage the gear - normally in the morning I'd wiggle it around a few times until it starts going in and then I'm good to go

- completely refuses to go into gear when I have my (slightly) hefty mate in the passenger seat, it seemed to behave itself when I had him sit in the back seat and spread the weight around

- started sounding a bit rumbly recently (more than usual)

Any help or advice would be massively appreciated.

Please and Thank you

85 should be a verto clutch. no adjustment.

sounds more like fluid level or seals.

position of mate not related to issue.

Check the following for starters:

Fluid level and leakage.

Wear on clevis pin through operating arm.

Wear on ball at bottom of operating arm where it sits into the release bearing carrier shaft

Overthrow nut adjustment on release bearing shaft.

Correct linear travel at top of operating arm when clutch pedal is pushed fully down - I don't have this linear dimension for a Verto clutch. For a pre-Verto the top of the arm must move between 0.5" and 0.6".

Wear on clevis pin at the top of the clutch pedal arm inside the car. This is VERY difficult to access and remove/re-fit.

Passenger changing position inside the car indicates a problem with the remote gear lever assembly. Mastic bush and the two rubber bobbins are probably shot with much wear in the mechanical rods.

Engine mounts and stabilizers also probably badly worn.

UPDATE: turns out it was a bit low on fluid and had some air in the system, also I'm an idiot for not checking that first - cheers for your help guys
