Try a BDL it won’t be perfect. But should get you going.

Phil.

I’ve tried a new BDK on the advice of minispares. My old needle was a BBW. I’ve changed the set of spark plugs and I’ve still got the issue. The two centre cylinder appear not to be firing. Could this possibly be due to the valves not being lapped incorrect ? I will try a compression tester tomorrow once a friend drops one off.

Just to confirm the engine fitted with a standard cylinder head was producing a healthy 73bhp at the flywheel so I can’t see any issue with pistons etc and can only be due to fitment of this head.

I’ve done a compression test this evening with the following results.

Dry test from clutch end to rad ( left to right)

Cylinder 1 : 170psi

Cylinder 2 : 50 psi

Cylinder 3: 50 psi

Cylinder 4 : 165psi

Wet test on low cylinders with a drop of oil:

Cylinder 2 : 50 psi

Cylinder 3: 50 Psi

Would this indicate valve sealing issue ? Think I’ll get the head down to a machine shop and check the new head gasket upon removal. is it worth double checking valve clearance ?

I’ve adjusted the valve clearance from clutch end is that correct using the rule of 9 ? Or should it start from rad end ?

That to me says head gasket leak between cylinders 2 and 3.

You say the head is new so it's unlikely to have valve sealing issues.  Where's it from?

Doesn't matter which end you start with valve clearances.  I start with number 8 fully open and adjust number 1; then number 6 fully open, adjust number 3.   So it goes 8,6,4,7,1,3,5,2.  But you can start on any valve and do them in any order as long as you use the rule of nine and check them all.
