Gearbox Layshaft Endfloat Problem

well i sanded down the .126" small thrust washer with 1000 grit sandpaper for a bit, cleaned it with wd40 and after lots of wiggling and fandagling about was able to get the laygear and layshaft in properly with a endfloat clearance of 5 thou!

I'd have liked a bit less, but at this point i'll take it.

 

So, that's that I guess...

Just got back from the UK with a suitcase full of car parts! My trip to potters bar was most fruitful, though it burned a huge hole in my pocket  :D

 

Anyway, back to putting my engine and gearbox back together now that I (thought) i had the right thrust washers for the laygear, unfortunately the 0.126" smaller thrust washer seems too thick to go in! im sure of my measurements but i just cant get the laygear in with both thrust washers in place.

 

so i went back to the old factory small thrust washer and fit a 5 thou guessworks shim behind the bigger one. It took A LOT of effort to get the laygear in (had to mallet the small thrust washer into place) and after a lot of fiddling, i fit the layshaft through, yet lo and behold the endfloat gap fits a 10 thou feeler gauge (makes sense since without the shim it fit 15 real tight). Tried adding an extra 3 thou shim and I just could not get the laygear in.

 

So what can I do? something is wrong. every youtube video out there makes it seem so easy to roll the layshaft into place, but between 2 thrust washers that keep falling off and the central oil pickup, one needs 3 hands to roll it in the usual way. Instead what im doing is to not fit the small one first, roll the laygear in partway so that it just holds the large washer in place, then fit the smaller thrust washer, with a mallet push it in, then finish pushing the laygear in.

 

with anything smaller than about 10 or 7 thou end float i just can't get the laygear in....

I have often wondered how critical it is.

 

Years ago a chap holed his 1100 gear box the day before the family were going on holiday.

 

Fortunately, there was an advert in Autosport for an "unused Gold Seal box, still wrapped" in Worcester.

 

When I drove him over to buy it, the seller claimed that it had close ratios. (which it hadn't) ,   When counting the teeth, I noticed a lot of end float in the layshaft, and the only thing I had was the feeler on a plug gaping tool which slid in very easily.

 

We knocked a fiver off the price, fitted it, he towed the caravan to Cornwall  and was still driving it 4 years later when the body failed the MOT.

I've had many late Laygears that have had a wobble on the Thrust Faces. I ground them true.

i'd rather not do anything of the sort as i don't have any equipment to properly grind he faces... so what would be the impact of leaving the endfloat with a 7-10 thou clearance rather than the <6 thou spec?

i'd rather not do anything of the sort as i don't have any equipment to properly grind he faces... so what would be the impact of leaving the endfloat with a 7-10 thou clearance rather than the <6 thou spec?

 

 

If the Faces are not perpendicular to the shaft centre line, it will wear the thrusts pretty quick.

 

If they are OK, but the clearance is up, then it will just have a 'clack' sound when going from power to over-run and vice-versa.

hmm i dont have a micrometer, but cant see any wear on the thrust washers either. so ill just leave it as i i think

You could throw in a 3 thou shim from Guessworks.

nah a 1 thou shim maybe, but 3 thou would take it right to the limit at 2 thou. considering how much trouble it gave me, i'll just stick with 5thou clearance since its on the edge of the acceptable limit
