Fancy a Metro in time for its 40th birthday in 2020? Here’s the AROnline guide to what to look out for…

Alot of cars seem to get better with age, their looks become retro and appealing.

Not the Metro, thats still an ugly little spud.

A couple of photos I took in the paddock at the Brands Hatch British Grand Prix (17th July 1982) of the Datapost Group A Turbo Metros racing on the day in the GP support races, running in the RAC British Saloon Car Championship and driven by Richard Longman & Alan Curnow.

More racing Metros in this old TMF thread here:-

I consider the Metro my baby. Although there were a lot of people involved in it as the project engineer for small car development from 1976 through to the launch all my days (and many nights and weekends) were spent developing and testing the Metro.
Many of them are no longer with us. I remember them with pride.
We were all incredibly proud of our achievements when it was launched on 8th October 1980.
Remember it was changed from a smaller mini replacement, the ADO 88 to the larger LC8 in 1978.
An all new car, new engine, new factory. Pressure from unions, political intervention.
It was no 1 best seller in UK in its time. Actually sold extremely well in Europe, particularly France.
Things were very different 40 years ago. I like to think that just as we were standing on the shoulders of the industry giants that went before us, so too today's vehicle design, development, testing and manufacturing continues to evolve.
i would say this but I think it was a success in its time.

I think the Metty was one of the best looking small hatches of the early 80's.

What was better:

I'd say the mk1 fiesta. Only because a friend had one so I grew fond of them. Then I had a mk1 sandpiper 2. It was half brown half gold and one of my favourite cars I've owned.

I want to get another one day especially a skinny bumpered one

I'd say the mk1 fiesta.

or the Civic, the CVCC had some pretty nifty lean burn stuff on the engine.

or the 205, which was awesome

or the Honda CRX

Look killer with a 6r4 kit

Behave yourself

My driving instructor had an original Civic, like the one in my post above. It was a nice car, but the styling was a bit fussy.

The CRX and 205 are later designs than the Metty.

Or maybe it's because it's dryer and hotter than a paint booth in yer backyard!
