Ok I did a video but don't know if this is any use for anyone, I found this to be useful when putting a clutch housing on recently. Let me know what you think if there is any point of this video or if useful.

 

This is just for the tool that slides the seal on without any damage, and you can have a nice drink at the same time!

I hope that I have misunderstood your post, but quite frankly, I don't think that a drink from you tool would be "nice".

Yep I think it would leak a bit as well! maybe drink it before cutting the can up.

I used a glass jar! Worked perfectly :)

I think the big issue (sorry pardon the pun) is not the getting the seal over the splines without damage (though that is clearly important) its getting the seal in dead straight in the clutch housing... hence the use of the tool that I think Nick above is referring too... by the way anyone have an opinion on the pink seal versus the latter black seal for a std road car.. ie not a huge monster rev screaming racer .. which is the most reliable road car seal ?

This isn't that full tool, it's for if you've got the housing off and just knocked it in squarly, or if you've pulled your engine apart you know its got a good oil seal and your just refitting.

 

It also isn't to protect your seal from the splines(although it does that), it is more to make sure you get the seal over that step without catching it, knocking the spring off and it allows you to spin the primary gear at the same time. Getting it over the step on the early A series primary gears can be harder than A+ which has a slighty chamfered edge. But if your trying to do this with the housing still on the car then you will need the special tool to push the seal on.

Nice work !

There's a number of ways of doing this job. I made my first installer tool from the outer race of an old diff bearing and some flat bar welded to it. I used that for probably 15 - 20 years before buying a tool.

 

I used to take the Primary Gear off the crank, fit the seal over it on the bench, then fit them together back on the crank.
