I've had my rear subframe galvanised in a hot zinc dip and looking for a advise on how to apply a black top coat. Is there any special steps I need to take before applying a top coat?

The is a special product called t wash, this is applied to the galvanised coating and left approx 1 hour, then washed down with water and dried off. It turns the zinc black and it can then be painted. We use it at work and it is effective.

May suggest that you reconsider painting it black.

It is dark under there, and if you ever want to do something, I have found it much more useful to have a lighter colour.

I actually paint mine white, but it very soon becomes the colour of the local mud, so my next one will be a sandy colour.

I will continue to paint the front subframe and the lower engine bay, white.

Usually with anything that's been Galvanized, you'll have better success in having paint stay put the longer you leave it, with a month being the minimum that's usually recommended.

De-gassing it can also help a lot. This is easiest done if you can get it in to an oven at around 120 - 150 Degrees C for about 2 - 8 hours.
