I think i already know the answer to this question but i though that someone with more exprience might know different.

I've got quite a rare A+ close ratio gearset (DAM3167 1st motion & DAM3168 laygear) removed from a 1275GT DAM2886 gearbox. The laygear teeth are quite badly pitted and the moly coating has worn off the 1st motion shaft.

I'm pretty sure they are only fit for the scrap pile. As there quite rare/vaulable i'm slighty reluctant to throw them away and was wondering if they could possibly be repaired? Or does anyone want to have a go at repairing them?

Id guess it could be spray deposited and machined again

I'm sure the first motion shafts are still available, that one is karput.

In terms of the Laygear, while not perfect, if for a road car, even with moderate output, what I can see of that one it won't let you down.

Get out in the sunlight with it and a dremel, polish out any sharp edges, particularly around the pitting.

What caused them to get like this though?

What are the bearing surfaces like ?

The pitting looks like it was causing by rust rather than wear, probably removed from the engine and left outside for years. All of the gear from the box have pitting on them and all on the same side/area.

The bearing surfaces are actually perfect, no pitting or damage. The little dog teeth on the 1st motion are perfect too, not one chipped!

I had the moly coating redone on a Mk 1 S 1st motion shaft some years ago, was done in Sydney, Oz.  Was asked to supply a new synchro cone so they could get the taper correct.
