Hi there,

Ive got a new ring gear to go onto my flywheel.

Ive read on other cars that the ring gear should only go on one way. however when looking at my new ring gear it doesn't appear like there is any difference between the sides?

Can anyone help/confirm this?

Depends on your starter motor.

Assuming it's the correct ring for your starter: Inertia motors pull the pinion towards them to engage the ring - pre-engaged push theirs. The chamfering on the sides of the gear teeth should be towards the pinion  to help them mesh.

Cheers ethel,

Its a pre engaged set up however the chamfering/lack of seems the same of both sides

Check the inide face of the ring gear. On the inertia flywheel set-up there is a slight step on the inner face of the ring geat which corresponds with the machining of the flywheel corresponding outer face.

The new ring has to be correctly orientated and positioned. Not much of a lip but it means that the new ring has to be well heated up to get over the iip and squarely into place.

Horrible job, tried it once and just could not get the ring gear hot enough to go on.

Good luck, hope yours goes on better.
