Hi anyone got suggestions for an SPI head cooling setup and fitting a thermostat (head already torqued up and assembled on block (back from refurbishment 1275 SPI to carb conversion) I'm just a bit confused on the best option.

  1. Should I drill the heater valve hole (don't want swarf in the water jacket or radiator)
  2. Should I drill and tap the thermostat sender unit below the thermostat (don't want swarf in the water jacket or radiator)
  3. My concerns are cylinder 4 getting hot ( how did the original SPI setup cope with this)
  4. Use an inline take off for a thermostat (mentioned in someone else's post)

In response to 1. and 2. you should be able to flush the swarf out of the cooling jacket fairly easily before connecting the radiator and heater hoses.

Regarding 3, although a lot of A series used the heater valve hole, coolant only flowed out of this when the heater was set to hot but was shut off when the heater was set to cold often when water flow at that point was most needed (i.e. hot weather) so it wasn't only the SPi which had to cope with this.  I think Metro engines had the heater outlet blanked off too and used a sandwich plate under the themostat housing for the heater outlet.
