Hi I have a 1963 Mini Countryman. It has a problem with the front brakes in that the wheel cylinders (single leading edge type) have seized and need replacing. I'm having real difficulty finding suitable replacements. I found a pair on eBay, produced by Lucas which are supposed to be compatible with "Austin/Morris Mini" and indeed they seem to be in every way apart from the position of the dowel in the back of the cylinder, which locks it into the back plate.

A possible and obvious fix would be to drill a new hole into the backplates R and L so that the dowels in the new cylinders fit -  but my question is would this be appropriate? Has anyone else done this before?

Clearly it is essential that the cylinders are locked into position, as otherwise they run the risk of twisting, which could run the risk of brake failure - something I'm certainly not willing to contemplate.

Your thoughts and advice would be gratefully received.

Why not upgrade to twin leading shoe front brakes, far superior and safer to what you now have.

I think Unburnt has the correct cylinder mentioned in their post

I researched this a while back while kitting someone out on a 59 Mini for parts on their rebuild.  I found that most items are available - the exception was the back plates and no where seems to have them and they now seem NLA   You can never say never though !!

The system looking at it - was a reverse version of the rear back plates used on the every day Mini - But the adjuster was at the 6 o,clock position opposed to the top, and the cylinder at the 12 o,clock position as opposed to the bottom

I do understand you wanting to stay all original. I bought a 1960 Morris Mini Minor back in the late 80,s and someone had changed the front set up to double shoe - double cylinders, and i kept to that. It was only an 849cc so I did not go the full hog and change to disc

Pretty sure the GWC101 is the correct unit you are after

I have also had this problem.

I didn't drilled the hole with the hubs on the car;  I was able to put them under a pillar drill and drilled a second hole and inserted a Mills pin, on the other side of the bleed nipple.
