Hi everyone,

I've recently put a metro 1275 engine into one of my minis, which has a ducellier ignition coil, plus an electronic ignition (think its the 64d dizzy?) my worry is that the coil may be one of the ballast resistor type coils, and the mini I've put the engine into is a 1982, so has a 12V feed going into the coil. is there any way i can tell whether this coil only needs 9V, or whether the full 12V is fine?

Thanks in advance,

Alex

With a multi-meter you can check the resistance of the coil  - I believe 1.5 ohms for a ballast or 9v coil and 3 ohms for a non-ballast 12v coil

If it is a ballast coil (9v) I think it will give you a nice fat spark all the time (not just for starting) but may not last long pushing 12v through it all the time.

Nice simple explanation here:

I actually have a similar coil on a 1275 '91 Cooper with Electronic ignition. I tried to measure it and ended up with an odd 0.8 ohm Reading... Don't know what to make of this value.

My 1275 came with a ducellier coil and a 65dm4 electronic disributer. it worked fine. I have since replaced it but keep it as a spare for running up test engines.

Not sure the make matters, there are basically 3 original equipment coils:

unballasted (3 ohm), ballasted (1.5 ohm), electronic ignition (1 ohm). That's the resistance measured across the low tension connectors with all other connections removed.

Probably not the exact values but close enough to decide which coil you have.

Cheers for the help. It's a 1ohm coil, so perfect for what I'm using it for. Thanks!
