Apologies, another question. I need to bleed the whole brake system (and clutch) and have a can of Dot 4 Synthetic fluid. Is this the best fluid to use? Very grateful for any advice.

Best wishes

Mike

DOT 4 is correct, see if it mentions glycol anywhere for reassurance.

Dot 4 is definitely not synthetic; but is the correct brake fluid to use in the brake and clutch systems.

I did hear only this week of a 'Synthetic' DOT4 Fluid. I guess they are all 'Synthetic' really !!

I'd suggest a little cautious research here to find out what the fluid is (Glycol or Silicon or ??? based) and it's compatibility with other fluids. Some are, some aren't.

Castrol React which was known as Response:

"Castrol Response Super DOT 4 is a high quality fully synthetic brake fluid that can withstand high load and high temperatures."

DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 are all ‘synthetic’ and glycol ether based. DOT 5 is also synthetic but silicon based. It is hardly necessary to talk of any of them as being synthetic as it does not help differentiate them.

I think DOT 2 was mineral or veg oil based and therefore not synthetic but I’ve never seen any!

That's really helpful, thanks. The fluid I have is made by Comma and has the word 'synthetic' on the bottle so I think that confirms what Pete says. Very grateful for everyone's help as always

Best wishes

Mike
