Modern Mini Problems

I’ve flicked through mini2 but thought I’d get your lots thoughts on something
I’ve just purchased a 2008 mini clubman as a ‘spares or repairs’ project
It’s a 1.6 diesel (psa hdi engine)
108k on the clock
So here’s the problem
Starts and drives fine
Has a red mini on a ramp warning light and a constant red (!) on the dash as if the handbrake is still on..
Quite smokey (black not blue) and the exhaust tips are very very sooty but not oily
I drove it home 200 miles and it run fine, a bit tappy and after a run on the motorway when I came off the slip road and idled the Oil pressure warning light came on then went off again...
Also when you open the oil cap when running you get puffs of whiteish smoke
Within the last 2 years/ 10k it’s had a new turbo with all the pipes, clutch, an has a full service record with receipts
My plan is to take the sump off and see if anything is clogged but wondered if anyone on here has experience with 1.6hdi engines and their issues, do I just source a replacement engine or does it sound fixable
Thanks

Does it have a diagnostics socket or port that you can connect to?
I struggled to diagnose issues on my diesel civic, but a £14 'OBD2' code reader, once plugged in, told me exactly what was going on.
Not sure if the minis have obd2 or something more specific...

Don't know much about the second generation MINI or the HDI diesel engine but some advice from MINI2 member below that may prove useful:-

My initial plan is to remove the sump and see if the oil pump pick up is blocked
I feel like oils not getting to the top of the engine so I’ll have a go at clearing all and any sludge, possibly replace the oil pump
failing that I’ll take it to a mini specialist for a proper diagnosis
the way I see it is what I paid for the car I could source a 2nd hand engine and have it fitted and still have a decent deal with a clear car, so might as well try and learn and have fun fixing this engine but not pour money at it

Get a code reader on it.
Sounds like it's got a stonking boost leak or boost control issue thats causing the black smoke, did they say why the turbo was replaced?
When diesels run that sooty it clogs the vanes in the turbo.
You might have one or two issues to tackle, hence needing the code reader to figure them out.

Have ordered a cheap code reader, but if it’s no good I’ve seen a local chap advertise who can come over and plug in some more professional equipment
So the invoice for the turbo says “investigate engine noise, traced to turbo”
Then the invoice lists a turbo, pipes and labour charges
It’s from a mini specialist so I trust that it’s a genuine invoice and not someone trying to hide anything
On start up the engine is very tappy but within 5-10 seconds it smooths out, almost as if no oil is getting pumped to the top of the engine, or there is a delay at least.

sell it, i had 3 cars with the 1.6 hdi engine, they are rubbish suffer badly with turbo oil feed problems, they have egr issues which can show up as depollution faults and go in to limp mode. my peugeot had to have 4 new injectors had only done 87k. my cooper d had to have a new loom as it kept cutting out and i had dpf issues in the end i removed it. i now have the SD with the bmw 2.0 no problems at all.
just google peugeot 1.6 hdi problems and you will see what i mean.

I’m sure the oil cooler is probably full as well but I cleared out these bits, run some cheap oil and flush through then swapped out the oil and filter again and now it runs and sounds as good as a diesel can!

Good job, pleased to hear it. Another carback to good health and not scrapped, as happens all to often these days. Enjoy it, the Cooper D with the PSA engine is a good little car, but that engine can be a little temperamental if neglected by previous owners.

Well this ones got a full service history and invoices for new turbo, clutch and flywheel as well as plenty of other service work so hopefully now the oil can actually flow it should behave!
Only paid £1200 for the car so even if it goes bang tomorrow these clubmans seem to hold their value better than the hatchbacks even as non runners

hello again all
rather than start a new thread i thought id continue on from this one with another smaller issue....
update wise the engine is still running very well after clearing all that junk from the oil pick up
so.. new problem/question...
The mini has a multi function steering wheel with a telephone logo on it which i assume would be for bluetooth so you could answer the phone.
ive had a MINI before with bluetooth and it was easy to set up..however, the button on the wheel does nothing.. and there is no menu on the radio to set up bluetooth... the phone button on the radio does nothing either..
checked the fuses and sure enough there is a 10amp fuse with a phone logo on it... checked that and it looked fine but i changed it anyways.. still nothing..
so to cut a long story short..
is my bluetooth broken?
did it never have bluetooth?
would MINI make a car with phone controls on the steering wheel but not actually have fitted bluetooth?
also got some DPF fault codes but ill cover them another time as they are a bit more confusing..

I'm not sure that bluetooth was standard in 08, but it did become standard around that time I seem to recall. Stick you VIN in the site below and it should list your full spec sheet. I can't remember whether the phone button worked with bluetooth or whether it required the kit that plugged the phone into the car directly, it's been a while since I had a MINI with the MFSW.
The multi function steering wheel was an option too, which in turn added cruise control. All of the multifunction steering wheels are the same whether all of the things it controls are specced as well e.g. there is likely a person talking on it, but not many cars had the voice control function.

Great link thanks! Didn’t realise you could find out that sort of thing online
Turns out the car originally came with stripes on the bonnet which has got me thinking!
And yes no option of Bluetooth selected but multi function steering wheel is there.
I would have asked on mini2 but that forum seems very dead
Thanks again!

I don't think it's uncommon for cars to come with the buttons on the wheel but no functionality, usually the bluetooth is linked with the premium stereo option, so basically the original buyer was abit of a cheapskate.
I have a Leon with the same thing, all the buttons but no functionality. I was able to retrofit the bits needed to get bluetooth etc working.
I wouldn't ignore your DPF fault codes, thats not something that will end well.

Well, since my stereo question has been answered I’ll move on to the dpf related issue...
Car shows no warning lights etc (bit suspect but read on)
If I plug my cheap scanner in I get a fault code showing “DPF flow resistance too low”
Which I think was P14a6 but I’ll need to check again...
In my head too Low surely means no resistance and possibly missing? As I get no dpf warning light but do have a spooty exhaust tip...
Issue 2 is P0234 which is a code for Overboost
This only happens if I try to redline the car at which point it will seem to confuse itself past 3500rpm and will hold at 3500 then surge up to 4000 and hold... then usually drop into limp mode
Once again... no EML which I find a bit suspect
My initial thoughts are...
Boost pressure / dpf flow sensor problem?
Or.... has someone removed the inside of the dpf, had it delete from the ecu but not remapped to compensate?
Would a missing dpf cause overboost??
