Hello, I have a VandenPlas 1300 1974 with A series engine and ( mini ) remote change gearbox. The gearbox change 'locked up ' ie could not move lever into any gear, I took off the remove and could still not move the exposed levers - not seized. I removed engine and box. Still could not get into any gear. I had the gearbox rebuilt came back. Still I can not move the shaft that slides through the box casting -it will turn and move the external ball and socket. Is it just me or should this shaft slide up and down easily? i.e. should I be able to get into gears by hand pressure on these shafts?

They do need a bit of a knock to get them in and out of gear, especially if the box has been overhauled.
Try a soft faced mallet, no need to bash it, but just to give it that nudge it needs.

If you are beefy and don't mind catching your fingers, it is possible to move the shaft in and out of the gearbox by hand, but with the engine out, I lever it out with a screwdriver or put my heel on it to push it in.
At the front of the gearbox, where the shaft would protrude, is quite a big bolt head; on the bottom of this is an indent ball and spring. This is what holds the shaft in position when it has been pushed in or pulled out. It might be worth carefully removing it.
Inside the box, under the shaft, are horseshoe shaped things, which the selector on the shaft engages. It is unlikely, as the box has been rebuilt, but possible that something could be jamming these.
