I just received in the mail a 12g295 head and there is a threaded hole with a bolt in it on the face under the heater tap. The head has been modified but I can't think why someone would put a hole there. Second water temp sensor?

Any insight would be great thanks

That would be my thought too, looks like a taper thread? I notice the heater take off is tapped also. These heads were also fitted to Sprites & midgets, so who knows  O_O

It's not standard and as Ethel put it 'who knows' what it was intended for.

I'd possibly be inclined to remove it to check it's not hiding anything nasty. While it's out, check the thread type and it might give a further hint to what it was intended for.

The 1275 cylinder heads on the Sprites / Midgets - did have "Plugs" on the cylinder heads.

12G2092 were 3 plugs for water holes on the jointing face of the head

AEA771 which had 2 water holes and were at either end of the head

12G3503 where 5 oil holes - were at either end of the head and a hole on top of the face of the head

ADP210 was a single plug which was a blanking plug and used on Midgets which used vertical flow radiators

A long, long time ago I had the opposite problem when I took a 998 Metro head in for work and was given another 998 head in exchange.

I seem to remember the temp sensor was near number 4 cylinder on the Metro, and my replacement head did not have it. The engineer solved it by tapping out the the water take off hole and I screwed the temp sensor into that.

Maybe it was fitted to an old Metro?

Nope metro heads were just the same as the mini but normally without the head heater take off as they used the thermostat sandwich for the take off.
