My JDM Cooper has a twin plug ecu and I need some information regarding the connections made at the smaller plug. There's only 3 cables in this plug, a sizeable white plus two smaller black cables ... however the black cables are only around 5" long and are then cut, making no further connection.

I'm unsure whether this is original out of Rover or whether something has been removed? Black would suggest a connection to earth but it's unusual to have more than one earth cable to an ecu.

I'm not sure how much this differs to the normal SPi / MPi ecu's, I've no experience of those units.

If it is the 1.6 ecu they are not used.

It could be the 1.6 physical unit, I'd need to check the rest of the connections. Mine uses the Rover 36/4 flywheel for the distributorless ignition but being a JDM is only single point injection so I assume only one of the injector outs would be connected. If that's the case it'd be wonderful if someone could break in and reprogramme it for twin injectors ... I could them fit the much simpler MPi twin injector setup, oh I wish!!!

I have an MPI I am restoring at the moment and the wiring loom is in a box.  If there is anything I can check for you let me know.

For 98 cars the 2 black earth wires are unused and are identical cut length on mine.

The white wire with a blue trace is one side of the wasted spark coil.

It will be in position 18 of the small plug

This one is needed.

As for what version of MEMS it runs who knows?

Cars after 95 ran 1.9 which supports single and multi injection.

Our 98 JDM's are a bit of everything.

1.9 is supposed to be readable through the OBD port under the dash.

I cant get a thing out of my OBD with my OBD scan tool.

I also have the 3 pin white diagnostic plug under the bonnet near the relay module.

This suggests it could be 1.6.

I have a Sykes Pickavant ACR4 on the way with 3 pin and OBD adaptors and will play around when it turns up.

I don't lose any sleep wondering because whatever version I have it makes the engine run beautifully hot and cold in all engine speeds.

In pre 97 cars the small plug was for the lambda/ oxygen sensor.
