was looking to get my dads old mini resto back together , he passed away in 2000 and the minis been in the garage ever since in bits , i cant find the v5 or the vin as the front end had rotted away and he cut the front off  in 1998, ive only the number plate which is still on dvla site  I was looking forward to getting it up and running again as it wasn't on the road since late 87 , il try digging through the various papers he left but im thinking its gona be a lost cause sadly the car is a 76 reg mini 1000 more sentimental value than monetary  any ideas on this  cheers

You need a friendly car dealer who has subscription access to Experian AutoCheck or similar which can search for the VIN using the registration number plate (if it is on the DVLA site).......there are usually some TMF members in the trade who can help or on the Mk1 Forum.

Just apply for the  V5c in your name. State that your father was the previous owner and he passed. So you would like a new V5c in your name.

they will try and contact the previous registered owner. If you have given them the correct name you should be good.

There are ways around it, you will be able to get the vin. I managed it but it's a bit harder now. Don't give up

V5 is not proof of ownership. It's who is responsible for taxing the car.

You have the reg, apply for a V5 in your name and it will have the vin on it. It should be straightforward.

been told b4 id need v62 which then needs vin to apply for v5 ,  you cannot apply for v5 without a vin  even if it was a direct relative etc that owned it

I suggest you start a new thread on here with 'VIN from Reg No.' in the title and hopefully a member of the forum who has access to Autocheck will notice and be able to help.

That has worked before for others in a similar situation. The public websites that used to work for such searches were discontinued by the new GDPR Data protection rules.

It does not have to be the end of the road......as already said, if you ask for help on the forum as described above in earlier posts someone will likely come forward with trade database access to get you the details to apply for a new V5c.
