Hi Everyone,

My 62 Austin Mini has a new problem.  When I'm at a standstill, it's almost impossible to slot it into gear.  When I'm finally able to do so, it grinds the gears.

The problem came out of no where yesterday while at an intersection.

I'm able to shift between gears without it grinding, but it takes some extra force to get it into the new gear.

My mechanical skills are new .. I don't know where to start on this issue, so any help or advice is much appreciated!

Thanks,

Ryan

Clutch not fully traveling? When you start it in gear handbrake off does the car lurch forward? ( press the clutch )

Im guessing the car will move when you try start it with handbrake off and the clutch down.

Check the clutch fluid. You might have a leaking master or slave cylinder.

Its a long shot, but I had a flywheel toothed gear shift outwards recently.

It caused the same symptoms that you describe.

Good luck with tracking the fault down and let us know what it was.

Hi Everyone,

There's a liquid on the ground where I park, and though she drips oil, it's a much bigger pool.  Unfortunately, it's dried up as I haven't driven her in a week now.

Also, with the car off, the clutch pedal travels fully, and I can move the shifter through all 4 gears.

Thanks,

Ryan

Hi Andy,

Could you tell me how you were able to diagnose it?  And links or videos would help.

Thanks,

Ryan

Checked clutch fluid level, sounds like a leak on the clutch, if the clutch doesnt fully decouple the engine you will struggle to chasnge gear when moving as your trying to drive the gears while still transmitting torque, Could be a split hose / bad slave .

It only became visible when the engine was removed.

It fell off when examined.

By that time it was useless and a new one was sweated on and spot welded.

Clutch might just need adjusting.

That's all it was.

I've also made the adjustment in my 1st DIY video.  Lot more DIYs and fixes to my Mini to come.

Thanks again everyone!

And to anyone looking in the future who wants to see the easy clutch adjustment, here it is in 2 minutes:
