I'm starting to see a lot of oil smoke on startup that goes away after a minute or two.

I guess my valve stem seals need replacing; but I replaced them beginning of 2016 and have done about 10,500 miles since. Is it time for new valves and guides; what's the options? It's one of the large valve MG Metro heads and I run Valvemaster to protect the seats.

Cheers  :-)

A lot of new "rubber" is far to hard and plasticy, and fails quickly .. so it could be that the valve seals have suffered the same fate. I've fitted the latest ones from Minispares and hoping these last a bit .. given the engine hasn't turned over yet and isn't likely to for a couple of years!

The brown MPI spec seals mentioned above are the best of the factory offerings.
If you’re taking the head off for inspection measure the valve stems using a micrometer, anything over 0.0005” in wear and they can be considered scrap. If the valves measure up ok but there’s more than a very small amount of play when fitted in the guide then the guides need replacing. The valve seats will need recutting after the new guides are installed.

Thanks for the replys.

I'll get the valves measured and fit the better spec seals assuming the valves and guides are ok. Cheers.
