Hello from Canada. I have a 1992 MINI mayfair spi 1.3 auto that i am about to do a manual swap on to make it a little less boring. Im going to use as much as i can from my engine. I am aware that i need a manual block. I have an a series manual rod change gearbox (not a+), a freewheel housing with no hole for the crank sensor. My first question is can an 'a' manual gearbox fit onto a a+ block? Im assuming it can but I need the experts to confirm.

Since its injected i apparently need the crank sensor. My freewheel housing does not have the hole for this. I can apparently drill the holes for it myself. Is this my only option. Would it be easier to locate one with crank sensor hole?

Im also assuming i can use the same ecu as the lists in the forum here never mention buying a different ecu. Will my ecu work properly on the new manual?

Thanks for reading this. I am building up an engine for the first time and need a bit of help on here. Im sure ill have a couple more questions along the way.

Thanks for all the help in advance!!!!

Paul

The A series box can be put on the A+ motor I'm 90% sure that you just need to choose the correct drop gears (someone will confirm.)

I'm unsure of the local laws however here in the UK we can fit an older engine to any car and it gets emission tested for the older engine. So your A series into an SPI shell CAN use carbs and be tested to the appropriate age of engine...

Hope this helps
And seasons greetings
Cal

Paul, my Grandson now lives in Vancouver, He has joined the Vancouver Mini Club, but he is on here as 'Cooperkid'.

He has a lot of Mini knowledge gained from working with me on Minis from the age of 4. he is now 25 (how time flies).

I'm sure he would love to talk about his project with you. You could PM him, or PM me and I'll give you his email address privately.

He has a 998 Mayfair with a 1060 cc engine, but it is in my workshop in England awaiting a thorough restoration. He restored it with a bit of help from me when he was 15, he sold it and has now bought it back, but it has been sadly neglected. It should be in Vancouver within 12 months.

Happy Christmas.

You're best keeping the castings as a matched set because they're bored as assemblies. I suppose if you can find an injection transfer housing you can probably find one as part of a full set, though modding one for a sensor shouldn't be too challenging. Especially if you have an auto housing to make up a drilling guide off.

Just to put it out there, you can fairly easily convert your Auto Engine for use on a Manual Gearbox.

You will need a Primary gear to suit a Manual small bore engine and with a tooth form to suit the drop gears, I'd say, it will most likely be a 24 tooth type. If you count the teeth on the Input Gear of the Manual Gearbox, that will steer you on to which Primary Gear you need ;- 24 tooth is A type, 29 tooth is A+.
Be sure too that the Flywheel Housings you have also suits the type of drop gears. The A type has a bearing of 1-1/16" OD and A+ is 1-3/8" OD.
