Hi all, I’m new to the forum and was wondering if anybody could help me. My 1992 Rover Mini SPI was running fine, I filled it with fuel, and left it overnight. The following day, it wouldn’t start. I’ve checked all the fuses, but when I turn the ignition key to start, only 1 relay energises in the relay box. Does anyone know what voltage the relays are? Could I put a 12V supply to them? Or will it damage the ECU? Or is it possibly a relay box or ECU fault? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Does the fuel pump prime?
Have you checked the immobiliser?
Also worth checking there is enough juice in the battery to kick it over properly.

The battery is fully charged, when I turn the key the fuel pump does not run and the engine doesn’t crank over. When I push the relays manually still no joy

Has the fuel inertia cut off triggered?

It sounds like you may have an Earth issue potentially in the relay pack or it’s connections. It might be worth unplugging both the connection blocks on the relay pack and inspecting each wire in to the back of the connectors. If it’s not that then the relay pack maybe suspect. The do get dry solder points, but before you go and buy a replacement check all your earth points on the car. SPIs are really fussy about earths!

Unfortunately the Earth closest to the fuel pump is tucked away behind the petrol tank under the rear light cluster.

When this happened to mine, that was the earth that failed due to corrosion.

Up and running again lost the 12 volt supply to the relay pack even though my meter was reading 11.8 volts . Ran a new supply and cranked over Bad connection on fuel pump fuse, cleaned it up and all works fine . I will probably replace the inline fuses with a fuse board .
