does the crank need to be completely removed to fit new thrust washers?
Only recently refitted my gearbox to the block only to notice 12 thou end float on the crank ,whilst changing the timing plate gasket.
Before I took on the half moon seal job the engine was running sweet @80bhp and has covered around 20,000 miles. That's over 20 years or so. Up until last september it was off the road for 6 years.

it's frustrating to think that only 2 weeks ago I had the block and crank sat in front of me! Picture I took a couple of weeks back

another recent picture, don't know whether anyone can see anything potentially wrong? Certainly only one of the washers is clear to see? Guess it's just my camera angle
I'll be splitting the swine apart at the weekend!!

Don't think the crank has to come out - if you remove the centre bearing cap and upper thrusts and rotate the crank the lower thrusts should follow the crank as it rotates so you can extract them.

You don’t need to remove the crank to do the thrust washers.

You have got this far I would strip the engine again so you can check all bearings and maybe just replace the rings. 12 thou crank clearance is massive and there might be wear on the crankshaft thrust bearing face. One needs to aim for 2 to 3 thou clearance.

Another main cause of excessive wear here could be incorrectly set up clutch or a pressure plate that is too strong.

Strip everything and measure all journals and bearing clearances.
