I'm having an issue with my starter turning the engine. The starter engages but just clicks like a dead battery. Battery is fully charged and I changed the solenoid for good measure. Could it be possible I have the wrong number of teeth on the starter? How do I check against the teeth on the flywheel or should I be looking at a wiring fault. TIA.

What type of starter? Pre engaged or inertia?

If its inertia make sure the solenoid is earthed to the inner wing (bare, shiny metal)

Make sure all connections are clean and tight.

How old is the battery?

New solenoid with all earth's grounded to bare metal. Battery has been tested and fully charged too. I'm lost as to why its not turning the flywheel, engine is free and the motor has been bench tested

What's the age?  Is the starter stuck? Can you rotate the starter at the rear by putting a 7/16 spanner on the shaft?  Starter only has two bolts, remove it and connect it to a battery (hold it in a vice or something) You'll see it working and the bendix going in and out as the motor runs.  Check also that the starter solenoid is connecting across the two terminals using a volt meter on the starter side.  Should show 12v when the solenoid is activated.  The clicking could be the solenoid activating but not connecting the terminals on the inside.

If you like a risk, to bypass the solenoid, Put a spanner across the solenoid terminals.  If the starter is working, the starter motor will run.  Make sure it's not in gear and be prepared for sparks!  Make sure the spanner does not touch the body.

Someone else had a similar issue the past few weeks. Theirs was wiring on a relay...This cut and paste from it may be of help:

Starting (cranking motor): Smaller brown wire feeds power to ignition switch (always); switch feeds through white/red to trigger the relay: relay feeds through brown/red to energize the solenoid, closing the switch to turn the starter motor. Note the relay recieves unfused power in a plain brown wire from the battery terminal of the solenoid. The relay witches this power into the brown/red, avoiding a heavier curent through the starter switch.

I checked the relay that has a brown red wire - when i took it off its mounting it is obvious what the issue is - the brown wire is loose and not connected.
