Hi all

Looking for some help.

I have been building my mini for decades, Kids came along and everything else, but a couple of years ago i finally got it all together.

After getting it MOT'd i went to get the tracking done and on the way there a terrible clunk/grind took place when i tried to pull away, Any I thought i had a smashed gerarbox/diff and as i had some other issues i wanted to eal with i decided to pull the engine and swap the box as I had a spare.

Anyway then built an extension on the house so the mini wasnt on the list again. I finally got back to it a couple of weeks ago and it is all done and i took it out for a quick test today and guess what - same problem.

I am almost convinced the shaft is being pulled out of the pot joint.

The only things i can think of are - the front suspension is too low or some thing is wrong with the adjustable tie bars, i have adjusted these to standard length (I think) 14.25".

I have 10" revolutions on 7.5" disks,

anything else you want to know please ask me as i cant figure this one out.

Thanks

Could it be the clutch?

A f###ed CV?

Can you link a video of it?

Thanks for the replies,

Clutch is fine pulls great till it happens and I hav checked the pots and it has been the same issue with 2 different gearboxes, pots havent been swapped.

I feel it is something to do with the geometry pulling the shaft out on the passenger side.

Any other ideas?

I cant make a video of it as I would have to be driving it at the same time :)

Thanks

Maybe the clutch slips on the shaft...
Does it happen with your foot down or in just cruising along?
Pot joints poping out is more likely tho.
Put wheels on full lock and see if you can move the pot joint out of the box (not completely or you'll have an oily mess) trying each way for both sides.
If it moves even 10mm, it means it's not locking in.
If it's this, it probably hasn't got (worn-out) the clip.

Thanks for the reply.

The constant here is the drive shafts, I have put a different gearbox on which had its on pots on it so to me that would be a hell of a coincedence that it s gearbox side.

I have adjusted the tie bars to what I thought the length on non adjustable tie bars and when it did it it wasnt as bad as before.

When i had the old box on I did see the pot spin and the shaft not so it has to be something with the geometry, so i need i think i need to set some standards. I will need to make sure the tie rod is exactly the right length, does anyone have the measurement end to end of the tie bar - not from 1 end to the bush etc, but the full lenth, I have googled it but got different results. Also does anyone have the height the gearbox from the floor so i can set up the hi lows correctly to standard.

Many thanks everyone for your time and patience.

You want to set the ride height using the sill to door step flange at the wheel arches on all 4 corners.

You can rebuild you pot joints with the cage the wrong way around that can cause loss of drive.

Thats the proper way to loose drive  :proud:

The shafts cages are good, I built loads in the past, but it is good to know, i have seen a few in my time where people have done that.

The 1st link is a good explanation showing discussing the negative camber which is what i believe is causing the issue, I am off for the next couple of weeks now so will be back on the oh so nearly 25 year completed project -  (Dont have kids) :)

Yep, did that, but it was 2-3 years before driving up a rough track moved the suspension and engine enough to let the cage and bearings dis-engage from the near-side pot joint.

In my case the gaiter came loose and I fired the ball bearings everywhere.
