Hi all , Hope you are all well . Wondering if anyone can please help me as i have noisy standard drop gears.

Now when I press the clutch in the noise goes so first i thought thrust bearing , I removed the bell housing and ran the engine and i can

still here the noise so this eliminates the thrust bearing .The noise is like a rumbling sound , but what is confusing is the sound goes

when the clutch is pressed . Also is it possible to get at the drop gears with out removing the engine .

Any help will be grateful Chris

Could be an idler bearing failing.
Drop gears and gear set are all rotating with clutch released and all stop rotating with clutch pedal pressed.
If it was a release bearing it would be noisy with clutch pressed down. The release bearing wont be rotating with the clutch released unless its incorrectly adjusted.

Yes, it is possible to get to the drop gears without taking the engine out by removing the rad and jacking the clutch end of the engine.

P.S. the easiest way to remove the rad it to take the engine out.

On the two occasions I have had the noise you describe that goes away when you press the clutch it has been the lay shaft.

When you press the clutch the gears stop rotating, at all other times the gears inside the box are spinning including in neutral.
