I’ve rebuilt quite a few gear boxes in the 50 odd years I’ve owned Minis but have never noticed this pattern makers mistake before.
This box is from a 78 T reg Van which is being restored here in Orkney. I’ve ended up doing the box

Where the reverse gear selector pivots on the large post, there is a pad cast into the casing for the selector pad to rub on. The arc of this pad has been cast in the wrong way round. It works fine and the pad does not come off the track but it is a definite mistake. Anyone know if this was rectified on the later, larger idler bearing boxes?

Ha - not something in particular I've paid attention to, but I just had a look at a later DAM5262 and that's the same way around !

Sorry Mr Moderator,
Didn’t mean to cause grief but I’m so used to posting in the MPI section - my apologies!

It’s only a slightly pedantic observation on my part but strange I haven’t noticed it before - or anyone else for that matter. Sometime I will be doing my box in the MPI engined Clubman Estate, as even though the crashed ‘99 Cooper LE I used as a donor only had 5000 miles on, it’s always spat itself out of 2nd when descending a really steep hill - so it needs doing and I’ll check that very late one too.

Ian
