Will propane be enough to heat the ring gear off a flywheel? I've seen a few vids on youtube where they use oxycetalyn. If not would mapp gas be enough?

I've removed them by cutting a slot in them and lifting them off, to put them back on I put the flywheel in a freezer and the ring in an oven and was really quick and managed to get away with it (just!).

I think my GF might have something to say on that ?

Before you cut it off as Homer says, photograph it so that you know which way to put the new one on.

It sounds as though you have a propane torch;  that will get it hotter than your GF's oven.

See if you can find some Celcon blocks in a builder's skip (they look like Aero chocolate)'

Put them somewhere to dry (not the GF's oven)...........lay the new ring flat on two and with crumbled bits, build a wall outside the ring to conserve the heat.

Put the flywheel in bubble wrap in the deep freeze.  it is more hygienic and and retains the cool as your GF rushes out into the garden with it.

I've always followed the factory's advice on doing these;-

It does take a good few blows to get through them with a Cold Chisel, but you can get right up to the register without damaging the Flywheel.

I do like Homers suggestion of using the oven and freezer though and will give that a go next time. As there's not much mass to the Ring Gear, they loose their heat pretty quick, so you need to work fast if heating by gas. I doubt you'd get there with MAP Gas, I use the burner on the Oxy.

I've also found with most of the aftermarket steel flywheels, they need to be welded in place to hold them on. I just run 3 small tacks, equally spaced, about 3/4" long does the trick.

For anyone else who wants to know, I did this by carefully cutting two cuts at 180 degrees apart into the ring gear with a hacksaw being careful not to cut into the fly then knocking it off with a chisel. Very easy to do in the end.

Also tried the oven and freezer method but didn't work. The ring was still too small to fit
