Hey folks,
I've been jones'ing for these driving shoes...
...ever since they came out (when I heard about
Nicolas Hunziker's art through
Petrolicious and ended up buying some of their
T-Shirts and being pleased with their quality - I even gave some as gifts), but at an original $125-145 a pair for the driving shoes back in 2016, I couldn't bring myself to spend that much money (I had - and still have - Mini repair parts to buy after all!)
Well, they must be clearing out inventory because they have dropped the price to just $50 a pair for most colors of the shoes.
Of course, the Gulf livery ones are STILL $135 but there are a bunch of other interesting color combinations at the $50 price, like the like the
Lotus livery and the
Langheck/Martini livery. I guess they are not marketing to women otherwise
"The Pink Pig" would have been a great choice too! If you are more of an introvert, there are plainer Grey & Black are options too.).
Okay, so I see this great price recently and I start looking at reviews in earnest - maybe they are crap? Maybe they are trying to unload them? Right?
But before I ordered mine I found
this review that ALSO has a discount code "FLATSIXES" that is still active and gives you another $7.50 off - which in my case was almost half the shipping cost to the US shaved right off. And the guy actually liked them:
"They’re functional, they’re comfortable, and they’re good looking to boot. You may not instantly become Steve McQueen by wearing Hunziker shoes, but they’ll make your driving experience even more enjoyable, and when you’re in a Porsche, that’s really saying something!"
So if you are in the US, like I am, after applying the FLATSIXES discount code, we're talking less than $61 "all-in" for a pair when they were as much as $145 to start - I was pretty much sold - then I found even more great reviews (more on that below).
Here's a screenshot from the cart today - so I can confirm this was no "flash sale":
Mine arrived not long ago and I'm loving them, Comfortable enough to walk around in (two separate days of 18,000+ steps - escorting my wife to back & forth the last few Wednesdays to where she's been volunteering to pack meals to send out to folks who are shut in - see:
https://www.glwd.org/), but still with great pedal feel due to the thin & flexible footbed under the toes. And they have a terrific "rolled heel" making accelerator modulation nice and smooth. I cannot say if the heel/toe rubber falls in the right place because I haven't done any spirited driving in them, but compared to some
Pilotis I've owned in the past (this was before they got popular and thus got "stupid-expensive"), it looks like it is not only in the right place, but it looks like it has the right amount of rubber there.
So I sound like I'm selling these or getting a cut - I can assure you that I am making absolutely nothing off this, no special "introduce a friend" discount or anything - I just thought this was way too crazy a sale to not share with my gearhead friends and a way to give back to this forum which has helped me so, SO often in the past in keeping my Mini on the road.
I hope you enjoy yours if you decide to order a pair!
Keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down, (yep, I was a rider back in the day. So when people ask me:
"Isn't driving a little Mini in Manhattan dangerous?" I tell them the story of when a NYC Taxi cab cut me off on my Suzuki GS425. By comparison, my Classic Mini is a TANK!)
Jim
