I tried here, but the engine number you have doesn't seem to fit the format.

Guessworks

What year/model is it?

Can you double check to see if it is actually BHM or BMH?

Open to correction but I believe it would've been a replacement engine such as a silver or gold seal.

It is 1989 mini thirty but it's not very original looking I don't think it's the original engine. Its definitely BHM

BHM is correct.

Its not a 998 as I said before it's definitely had a replacement engine it's at least 1275 just wanted more info on when and where the engine came from if possible

If it's a BHM number it's a factory gold/silver seal engine as mentioned above. These aren't fitted to new cars, they are new/reco engines bought from BMC if you need a new one

Thank you timmy! Maybe if I scrape back the black paint on the engine it will be silver /gold underneath, what is the difference between silver/gold?

I'm just about to swap out the 998 in my mini for a 1275 unit. I'm just looking at what I need to do for getting the V5 changed and for this I need to provide a engine number. The ID plate is long gone, so any suggestions what to do for this?

Cheers

You can make up a number of your own choice.

As far as changing capacity on the V5 it can be tricky. They’ll want a garage receipt for the engine build indicating the engine cc or an engineers report.

The times I’ve changed my engine I’ve just not bothered. If you do the job yourself why should you have to pay for someone else to inspect it? Presumably they take the head off to measure the bore and stroke to confirm the capacity.

The level of recon .. gold was a full engine, and silver just the short block. My A35 has a gold seal .. the lot was resprayed: block, head, sump and end-plates.

There should also be a couple of letters stamped into the engine plate which would indicate the amount of overbore and crank re-grind. If that is accurate mine had a 20thou rebore but a massive 40 thou off the crank!! I'll check when it's stripped .. it's seized anyway after over 40 years of sitting in a garage.
