Hey I recently acquired a RHD 1971 Austin Mini 850. Ive always wanted one of these. I believe it sat for 20 years and have no clue when/if it ran before that. It has an SU HS4 carb and I'm getting fuel and spark. The problem I'm having is it only starts when the choke is pulled and it will Rev high randomly without me touching anything. and when it does idle it is pretty high (choke is pulled halfway at this point) if i try to give it gas it kills the motor. any ideas what it could be? Im gonna check for vacuum leaks and whatever else y'all may think could be the issue. I also have new plugs/wires on the way just to get rid of the old ones.

Thanks for any help!

A leak does seem probable, though opening the throttle should reduce the vacuum and improve things.

If it's sat that long the carb is very likely gummed up from the old fuel. It's a simple job to remove the lid from the float bowl for a clean out, check & reset of the float valve. You could also remove the dashpot to check the piston isn't sticking, there's oil in the damper. A more obscure possibility is a blocked float chamber vent.

Sounds like it's running very lean. As Ethel said, a carb service is required.
