Hey Forum

My mini from 1977 is making a click click click noise when I drive, the noise is from right wheel/gearbox. The car took a hard hit to the side of the wheel. I stopped the car lifted it and tried to spin the wheel while in neutral, there is no clicking sound from my left wheel, but there is from the right. Is it a faulty inner cv joint? I'm learning towards inner cv, but I just need some clarification before I go buy a new one

Thanks in advance

Its highly likely you've damaged some of the suspension components, possibly also the outer cvt joint. This is the one that sits behind the wheel and these tend to click when they wear or are damaged. They're usually noisier when the wheel is steering on full lock where the joint is then under the most stress.

I'd jack the car up and safely support it then have a good thorough inspection around the suspension and hub for anything obvious.

Cheers, Steve.

Thanks for the fast respond Steve

I have lifted the car and turned the wheel by hand, the noise is coming from the gearbox, I have listened to the outer cv and it seems okay. The hit was directly from the side, it was a slide to the curb. And you might be right about the suspension but haven't noticed any damage

Thanks again

You might want to see if the noise is coming from the pot joint (inner cv). If not and its definitely coming from the gearbox, I would suspect the differential. Was everything ok before the wheel was hit?

Cheers, Steve.

I'd suggest disconnecting the drive shaft from the Inboard CV, then spinning the hub and then the Inboard CV and you'll soon hear which is making the noise.

I hope it's the CV ,,,,,

If it is the diff, shouldn’t both wheels click when they are spinning? Even by hand, or is that the whole purpose of the diff
Im getting a bad feeling now...
Thanks guys

If you jack up both wheels and spin one, the other should spin in the other direction without any undue noise from the differential. Any noise, roughness or excessive play when changing wheel rotation direction denotes an issue with the planet gears or diff pin inside the cage.

Whilst up on axle stands and secure, you could try selecting 1st gear with the engine running on tick over and see if there's any undue noise coming from the diff. Don't get underneath the car though for safety sake, but any issue with the diff or final drive should be apparent.

Cheers, Steve.
