Just started my mk1 for the first time in 15 years. Plenty went well, it started relatively hassle free, good oil pressure, didnt need easy start, static timing was enough to get it going etc.
However, I noticed some bubbles coming out between the head and the block where the serial number plate is. I didnt fiddle with the engine during the build, just took the head off, cleaned it, new head gasket and a smear of grease to help seal it. Theres currently no coolant in it as I was just testing would it start well enough to move on to the next stage of adding coolant and trying to dial in timing and mixture etc. Its been probably nearly 5 years since i tackled the engine, and I knew there would be some time between me actually getting the engine started so i poured a little bit of two stroke oil down the bores to keep them protected while I was focusing on bodywork. a bit of petrol was also leaking from the float chamber so im kind of uncertain as to the way forward now. I primed the oil pump before trying to start the engine by taking the plugs out, so im assuming an excess of two stroke oil would have sprayed out.
Take head off and investigate, or is this reasonable leakage for a first start up ? i really dont know.
