Hi everyone,

I have been needing to get new tyres for the Mini, with the old ones being way too old to be safe. Locally, it can be tricky to get 165/70R10 tyres, with some people importing Yokohama A008s. We do have a local motorsport supplier who stocks Dunlop R7s. I was wondering if anyone has experience using them on a daily and what the wear rates were like. I would feel bad to fit them and be forced to change them in a year because they wore out too quickly.

Thank you,

Vinay

As a 17 year old, I quickly wore out a set o Dunlop C41, and was talked into buying a set of Michelin X, because they wore well.

After my 3rd prang, I threw them away, 1/2 worn.

A set of good tyres is cheaper than an accident.

These are good tyres, hence my question as to whether they are perhaps too soft a compound for a daily driven road car. I know A008s are excellent road tyres but they are not as easy to get locally.

i have Dunlop R7's on my Mini although it is not a daily driver but don't think the wear rates are that bad unless you use the car for track days or similar. I know many on the Mk1 forum use them also and there are some threads on there on wear rates when they first came out and were originally imported from Japan. They are however a more expensive tyre than Yokohama but are a classic tread pattern very similar to the classic Dunlop Racing CR65 tyre.

Thank you! I'm going to give the Mk1 forum a search now and look for threads on wear rates. I do daily the Mini, but it's usually only around 15 km a day and not particularly fast. I think it might be the best option, and I don't think my Mini can go on a track without a centre oil pickup.

Recent Mk1 thread below, it does seem that some say the R7 wear rate is higher when used in anger.....

I have used the 165/70 10 Dunlop SP Sport R7's.

They don't have as much tread depth as say a Yokohama when new and they do wear quickly with spirited driving but that is of course the pay off for better grip. You could easily wear a pair of fronts out in 5000 miles without driving like a crazy boy racer but drive like a pensioner and you would no doubt get better mileage.

One thing that may be worth bearing in mind, depending on your location, is that they are much better in the wet than the Yokohama A008.

In the U.K. they are much more expensive (+ 50%) than the A008 so if you can get them for similar money to the A008 I would try a set of Dunlops.

Hey !............I object to your inferring that pensioners drive slowly.

Only a select few of us know what it is like to drive legally at over 100 MPH on country roads.

As one who always seems to have 9 speeding points on my licence, I find it is the young who creep along, worried that their "Spy-in-the-cab" will load next year's insurance.

Thanks, everyone :) Placed my order for the Dunlop R7s today. They will be delivered once the lockdown is lifted.

Yeah, +1 on this!

Don't assume that because we are OAP's we creep along the roads slowly.

Remember, 'if in doubt, flat out'!
