Just seen these advertised by MiniSport, but no information on their website at all, and they are out of stock.

I'm not sure if it fits before the oil pump in the gearbox or not. Anybody have experience of this item please.

Sits on the back of the box at the top of the oil pick up. Do you not have one in your sump plug?

You'll have to clear it off regularly to prevent potential oil blockages. I've never liked the idea of them as if they start to build up, it'll let a large quantity of metal into your pump.

I've got the minispares version, as above it fits in the back of the gearbox before the pump. I remove the plug and clean it every 1000 miles with an oil change, but it is a bugger to get out with a large bore long 3 into 1 manifold. I have to remove the driveshaft. Might be easier with an LCB.
I've read about concerns with debris coming off the magnet and damaging the pump, but I tend to think without the magnet that debris would be going through the pump anyway so any you can keep out must be a good thing.
I've fitted the gold extra strong magnetic plug to the trap but it needs modifying on a lathe to make it fit.

Thanks everyone, at least I understand where it actually fits now! The plug does seem in a very inaccessible place with an LCB fitted.

As I only do a few thousand miles each year and change the oil and filter annually, I think I'll stick with just the long magnetic sump plug and make a note to change the oil pump every engine rebuild.

Oil pumps aren't expensive, I wouldn't consider not replacing it if the engine was being stripped.
