Has anyone tried using Tank Sealer in a classic mini petrol tank? If anyone has, doesn't it permanently block the gauze filter that's on the inside end of the pickup outlet pipe?

I'm restoring my two original petrol tanks from a 1969 MkII cooper S and both have the standard gauze filter inside the tank. I've managed to clean the tanks out and the filters look good and clean with no blockages. I've been advised to tank seal them to stop then rusting on the inside again but I suspect that it's not a good idea with older genration mini tanks that have the filter inside the tank. Anyone any thoughts?

well the obvious solution is to remove the filter and fit an inline one

I used it in mine and indeed it blocked the gauze and the breather pipe at the top as well. Really pissed me off because I didn't know about it. We gently drilled them out with a snug fitting bit and fitted an inline filter, had no issues since. We also had already planned to fit a new sender so the original was what you may say "stuck"

I had a tank fail once on a driving holiday in Scotland. 250 miles from home on day 2 and suddenly we have a boot full of petrol. All our clothes in bags in the boot plus the rear seat and all the carpet. It ran as far as the front footwells.

Any way to avoid that scenario is a good thing.

Is tank sealer resistant to the new E10 Petrol?

I use the POR15 Tank Sealer in all the tanks I make.

It's a fair bit of work to clean them. I strap them on to the engine stand so I can spin them over, it get rather laborious doing them by hand.

I think most Sealers will block off the gauze filter in the standard tanks, however, as you are finishing up, put a hose on the pipe outlets and blow through them, come back a few times for about 2 hours to do this, or if you have a decent fish tank air pump, connect that up to it and stand the tank such that the pipes are up high.

I've found these to be very good products, but, be sure to follow the instructions to the letter.

Thanks for the advice guys. I believe the POR15 Tank Sealer is designed to work with petrol with high levels of ethanol, as used in the USA. I think I'll try the air pump idea. It's for the main left hand tank which is in very good nick. However, the right hand tank has pinprick holes in the bottom where it's rusted. So probably a new tank. Expensive but I don't want a boot full of petrol next to the battery.

Cheers

Iirc in the por15 instructions for holes in thanks they suggest sticking tape on the outside, then the sealer will fill fair sized hole.

I did both my left and rh tanks with the kit, it's good stuff, I was really impressed with how the cleaner got the inside down to bare metal, looked like a zincy etched finish

We’ve used the por15 kit on my hairline cracked MPi tank, worked an absolute treat
