Hi, I own a 1990 998cc mini city. The engine has been rebuilt with a 1987 head.

When I go to start it, it turns over fine and at speed (don't think it's the starter motor). Most of the time, I do manage to get it started with a lot of fiddling with the choke and throttle. The timing is set to 8°, the mixture is OK.
Also when I do get it started it sounds like it is running on 3 cylinders until I bring the revs up slightly and keep them up until it clears up (usually takes between 5 and 10 seconds)

Any suggestions

Stock cam (not sure on specific but its the same one it came with) . The only modifications to it are a stage 1 kit (high airflow filter, smaller needle, manifold, exhaust) and electric distributor.

For what it’s worth I have a 1990 Mini Mayfair 1000 with an original John Cooper Conversion, so very similar to your Mini. I find mine starts, idles, and drives best with timing about 16 degrees BTDC. Might be worth trying more advanced timing.

Put more advance in, just enough to get it started

All fixed, turns out it was a snapped wire from the coil to the starter motor, fixed it and put in a new set of plugs and started up instantly

Thank you though
