The manufacturer believes its an overkil to use Klinger material on a mini but they are not aware of how the mini leaks oil-Rover did however realise the problem and started using this type of gasket on the MPI models from 1997 on where they did not want expensive on labour warranty costs.

Tighten it as you would a head gasket, that will mean using just your fingers as the first stage since the torque req'd is much lower. If the cover is bent it could as a consequence of having to lever it off too much gasket clag.
The glass in your Mini's doors is likely flatter than your worktop
