Hi chaps, I recently replaced the timing cover gasket on my 998cc cooper engine as there wasn't one there except silicone sealant and was leaking oil. I used a proper gasket with hylomar and also centralised the crank seal (no leaks from this). I'm about to fit a new one again as the new gasket leaked. I had thought it could be the half moon seal but since removing the cover and wiping it down there hasn't been any leak. Can I safely say it's definitely the cover seal that's causing the leak? I also have rtv here and would like to know if its best to try the rtv? Or try another gasket and hylomar?

I found I had to nip up the bolts on the timing cover to stop a weep from a newly replaced gasket. I had torqued them to spec on fitting the timing cover but they needed a little further encouragement to stop the leak. Just a thought before opening things up again.

It's already off. I have placed the cover on a flat surface (kitchen worktop sshhh!!!) And It was rocking a mm or two from the top and bottom of the cover. so I have dressed it flat again. I wonder if this is the issue as I do recall fastening the top bolts first which would have kept the bottom face from going flat.

The manufacturer believes its an overkil to use Klinger material on a mini but they are not aware of how the mini leaks oil-Rover did however realise the problem and started using this type of gasket on the MPI models from 1997 on where they did not want expensive on labour warranty costs.

 

TIMING COVER GASKET "GENUINE" PRE A+

"The klinger material is the next generation gasket and although more expensive is the best to use for longevity on those leaky old timing covers.
Green in colour one side and black the other with klingersil markings."

Tighten it as you would a head gasket, that will mean using just your fingers as the first stage since the torque req'd is much lower. If the cover is bent it could as a consequence of having to lever it off too much gasket clag.

 

The glass in your Mini's doors is likely flatter than your worktop
