Hi from sunny Kent. I have a 1979 minivan. I notice that the water temperature gauge doesnt work since I moved it! The gauge needle swings over to the right when I turn on the ignition  but stays there even when the motor is definitely hot! The third wire from the back of the gauge traces back to a brass sender. How can I check if this is doing anything?

Put an Ohm meter on it (the sender) and check resistance when cold, warm and hot. Also check continuity from the "third wire" to the "brass sender".

What brand of gauge is this and is the sender a 1 or 2 wire type ?

In response to Quinlan's suggestions I am not sure where I am supposed to poke the prods of my Multimeter to check the resistance of the sender. If I prod the terminal on the sender with one lead and earth the other I don't get any reading regardless of how hot the motor is. #

TMF - The instrument is a TIM electronic with a single wire from the sender.

Apologies!

My bad, I was in MPi mode. They have two tangs and the resistance across them varies with temperature.

Thanks for your prompt response - I can only see one teng though this is a threaded item protruding from the sender and a tag is attached to this carrying the wire upto the instrument. I have had a peep at a new sender on the Somerford website and there's only one teng on that?
