Hello,

I've recently bought a 1988 Austin Mini and it's suddenly developed a loud knocking sound from the clutch when idling. The noise goes away when I depress he clutch.

I've red a few forums stating it could be the clutch release bearing or the idler gear.

Can anyone help?

I can post a video of needed.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The noise could be from either of these these or at a stretch, the crank thrusts, though, usually these will make it knock when your foot is on the pedal.

I think a video may help, but I suspect you may need to start taking a few things apart.

First off though, back off the bolts that are for the timing cover plate. This is a small diamond shaped steel plate that's bolted on to the towards the top of the Clutch Cover.

Hi Moke please see attached video.

I put the clutch down a few seconds in which stops the noise. It also goes away when I give it a few revs.

This is the clutch cover - sorry it's up-side-down in the photo. The Timing cover is the diamond shaped cover that's held on with the 2 small bolts on the bottom of this photo. Back those bolts out, they maybe a little too long.

I'm not sure if it can be done, I usually upload it to one of the video platforms (like youtube) and then put a link in the forum.

Also I couldn't see the photo you attached?

Sorry - included now.

Having listened to your Video, that's not clutch bearing. It could be the diaphragm of the clutch hitting the bolts I've mentioned here or engine mount bolts which are on the same cover, but on the lower side.

It could be Idler Gear

It could also be a Big End Bearing too. Have you got an Oil Pressure Gauge fitted ?

Hi Moke,

Started up again this morning and the noise has gone away. It only seems to happen when the engine is idling too low. I've now adjusted the throttle to idle at about 900 and the noise has almost completely gone.

A few people have said that a bit of noise is normal so maybe it was just accentuated by the low revs.

I will look at the bolts in the clutch and see if they are causing any issues

I don't have an oil pressure guage
