building the 998 engine very soon. Looks like spec will be all standard apart from, 12g940 head and pocketed block, spi inlet with speeduino. I cant work out if its worth the money to upgrade to the evo1 camshaft, i see the spec etc, but on a 998 will i really notice that much difference?

Also can you get offset woodruff keys for setting the timing? i cant remember if i have seen this for the a series or the lada ba3 engine.

thanks

You can get offset keys for the A series engines.

Use a Kent 266 for a road engine, it's as close to standard as you'll be able to buy.

ah ok thanks. the 266 as a quick scan looks like over £200, the evo 1 is like £95 all in but plus postage. If it was a little better over the standard, and lasted ok, then its worth it, but the standard cam is not worn at all you see. The 998 i have is like new inside. i think even with the standard cam and it being mapped with injection will be a rewarding motor to drive.

Ah I see, you could use the EVO1 cam as it is half the price, the reason Kent cam kits are expensive is they only come as kits, you cant buy just the cam.

However I agree that the EVO1 cam is a good cam for the money

You could PM 'johnv' on here about the Evo001 cam. He has one in a 998 Cooper and I believe he likes the way it performs.

ah ok thanks! im in two minds as the standard cam is in such good condition. However if it will unlock some more driveability, its worth the extra money.

Fitting a 12G940 head to a 998 will move the power & torque band higher and may reduce driveability at lower revs. Why do you want the bother of a 12G940 with the need to pocket the block deck? You really won't gain much over a basic 998 head which has been gas-flowed and fitted with larger valves.

well the only reason is i have a fully rebuilt one in the loft, new guides, unleaded seats, the lot.

I am comming around to thinking the standard head maybe better though. Just looked at the size of the valves as standard and they look so small! The engine could easily get into a lot of cash, and its something that i dont want to be a fast car, just a reliable car. If i do more that 5,000 miles in it while i own it, ill be surprised you see!

Maybe a bit of flowing, and get the compression up a bit on the standard head. i do like the way with the standard head, it looks factory, while with the 12g940 it dosnt, and i know its not.

I was looking into a spi conversion for a su, you take the dashpot off and put an adapter for a single injector in there. I like that as it would use the standard filter, and also i could make a cover that looks like a su. The coil packs etc would be hidden anyway under the engine front cover...

hmm... ;)))

I also spoke to mini sport today and they reconed the standard cam is the one for my engine. Its like new too!
