Just picked up a stage II LCB and am trying to decide if I should just remove the head/carbs etc to get the old one out and to install the new one, or is there a technique to removing/installing without removing the head? I seem to recall someone describing the process but have been unable to locate the thread.

No need to remove the head.

just remove the old manifolds and fit the new one.

Take off the carb and manifold, undo the top engine steady and pull the motor away from the bulkhead.Fit new lcb with a twisting action. You may struggle for a while and then suddenly it will drop in and you will gaze in wonderment as to why it did not fit the first time.Have fun.Steve..

Just to echo earlier comments. Head certainly doesn’t need to be removed. I’ve not done one for probably 10 years, but it can be done with everything in situ.

The first time will take a lot of tea/beer and swearing...
By the 12th time it'll fly in.

When I have fitted these, there was a few sets that I also need to undo the Engine Mount under the flywheel and slide the engine forward as for as it would go. The Australian made types are easier to fit.

I replaced the manifold studs with bolts, so you don't need to lever the engine forward to remove the manifold.

I haven't done it for a while and +1 for loosening engine steady/ies but....

IIRC its a bit counter-intuitive that you put the outer part in with the exit facing the diff and then turn it towards the head when the exit gets below the subframe rail

(Thinking about it I guess this works due to the shape of the down pipe and going the other way makes it hit the bulkhead but as I say not done it for a while)

The single inner goes in easily (Again IIRC)

As soon as I get it back from ceramic coating I’ll give some of your recommendations a try. Thanks to all.
