for those who have used them (virgin here) they seem to be covered with some coating giving a slight sticky feel. do then need cleaning before fitting/use?

It's a packaging / anti-rust film that's applied.
I do wash it off, usually in the parts washer and then a wipe with paint thinners.

perfect. it is what i was thinking but as they made no mention in their instructions i thought i would check.

I seem to recall it's mentioned n the master catalogue, but yes, it should be in the instructions !
