This is a question I never thought I'd be asking!

I have what I think is an early shell.

Under the roof rain channel gutter there is another lip spot welded on.

So we have the rain channel lip going up, and this additional flange/lip turning down.

Can anyone explain this? Ive never seen it before and as I am about to get the shell painted I would like to know if I should cut it off or offer it to the heritage museum!

Please feel free to tell me it is a long lost Le mans winning shell that I can use to pay my mortgage off with!

Cheers

Ed

Sounds like the drip rail. Pretty standard for all but the very earliest mk1's, all mk2's, Mk3's and I think early mk'4s

Drip rail, discontinued in 1980, the idea is it stops drips going into the car/door apperture.

They work well, just don't headbutt it getting in/out - possibly why they were discontinued, too sharp to pass the sort of tests included in the IVA.

Looks were somewhat deceiving. Oversills and rear end damage which had been poorly repaired. Hence the full resto he's been through since.

BUT totally bog stock with less than 33K on the clock.

This is what he looked like before i restored him. In this picture he had been converted to Cooper S discs and Callipers, hidden behind Cooper S rims and yoko 165 tyres.  replacement A panels and proper short sills. Ran him like that for two years and other than a issue with a copper hg ran like a good un.

I'm a sucker for the 1970s look.

Sorry for off topic, but I just wanted to say that I more than likely walked past your car on Maderia Drive that year and would have said "Oh I like that one".
