I removed the padded lower dash rail cover some time ago as it was in terrible condition, and I really like the look of the bare metal dash rail.

Has anybody styled their interior with bare dash rails? If so I would love to see some pictures for inspiration.

Thanks!

Just look for photos of the interior of the Mk.1
They all had bare dash rails except for the Coopers and Super deLuxe models.

The padding was added for “impact protection” so you may have issues with future safety inspections if you have them

This is my Mk1 with the bare painted dash

My Grandson' 1985 Mayfair which is being restored as a replica 998 Cooper has had the padding removed and the upper and lower dash rails and A-post will be trimmed with black leather cloth like the original Coopers.

Commercial Mini Vans and Pickups had no padding on the lower dash rails. If you have a Mk2 onwards Mini it has a larger slot in the metal lower rail for the switch panel when compared to the Mk1 Minis. Therefore you will need the larger switch panel fitted to the later Minivans and Pickups. There are several types available for toggle or rocker type switches.

Or you can weld a filet in like this - the holes are then in the correct position for the Mk1 switch panel.

It won't be, on my 1989 and 1993 it's just the ends that are painted

I've removed the top rail but due to zircon kept the bottom.

Thanks for the posts -  I will do some more Googling on interiors. I would like to keeo the same later dials rather than change to a center one.

Good to know about the van/pickup switch plate (or filet), I was wondering the best way to make that work.

The later dials in front of the driver I think may look a bit odd without the top and bottom padded dash rails as the plastic bezel sticks out further than the original centre dials which are set much further back just behind the metal dash rails.

How did you get the bottom rail cover off? Mine won`t shift.
