Cheers for that Richie. We hadn't already got to that conclusion already...

And i dont think the battery would melt. Yes the electrolite would get warm, maybe even boil, but the battery itself wouldnt melt. Plus they are only 33A/h batteries, with a direct short they will be out of charge very fast!

True 33a/h with a direct short would run out of charge quickly, my nightmare hypothesis was taken into account that the donor car's engine was running and charging the battery.

once me and my mate's shorted a battery out for a laugh, while it was being charged by a 110 amp alternator off a recovery truck, it melted and went bang, took 12 minutes, so you see it could happen.

Along the lines of electrical mishaps....

A high-school friend of mine went into the military and was responsible for maintaining some of their large trucks. These things use LARGE batteries typically at 24v system voltage. His co-worker dropped an adjustable wrench across the hot terminal and chassis ground. He said that after a very, very short period, there was a brief bright glow and then the wrench fell in half on the floor.

Ive managed to spot weld a ratchet handle to one of my Harriers, that was on a 28v DC system. If it was an AC circuit it would of been 'bye bye hand' as its 115V 400Hz!
