Hey there!

 

My SPi has been blowing the fuel pump fuse recently. The first time happened when I was low on fuel. Topped up with petrol and a new fuse (10A) and it was fine. Has blown probably 3 times since. All times it has been open road speeds, with about 3/4 - 1/2 tank of fuel. 

 

I have visually checked the wiring around the fuel pump and boot. So far it all looks ok, however I havent looked behind the tank to check the wiring there.

 

Any areas which I should look at first?

Is it a plastic fuse or a glass one? If plastic one and its melted a bit first then if the pump is on its way out, they can short out inside. They still work, but the constant shorting on the windings heats the fuse up, then it will eventually blow.

Ah right. Thanks! It is a plastic fuse and the last fuse to blow had melted a lot. Looks like a new pump then. Is there any way to tell or test the current pump when I pull it out?

not sure if you can test it with out taking it apart, i dont really know. I just know from experience itll be the pump.

Just a suggestion as it happened to me but I had a problem with the rear brakes binding. At higher speeds I blew the fuel pump fuse a couple of times without realising cause and effect. Long shot but worth checking handbrake / brake drums. But if you're on the original pump it's perhaps on its way out after 25 years. Not sure whether the pumps can be stripped and rebuilt?

Thanks both. Brakes are in good shape. I'd say with a fair amount of certainty that it is the original fuel pump, so that makes sense.

I suggest you try and disconnect the fuel counter (fuel cauge) to see if it does it again or not..
The wire that goes to the fuel tank leads to 2 connectors, probably is on the side of the tank.
Have you ever took out the fuel tank from its place?

I replaced the fuel level sender last year with a new replacement. What is the theory disconnecting the sender unit? That this could be shorting out?

Fuel tank has been out a few months back when doing some suspension work. I'm fairly certain nothing got pinched when reassembled, but there is a chance... I should probably pull it out again and check...

These days that I gave you this answer, the electrician gave me this suggestion. I had the same problem with the fuses. Thats why I asked the first question. It was not the solution for me.
In my case, what happened was that a mechanic took out the petrol tank and when he put it back, he didnt put it correct and the cord was being crushed by the corner of the deposit, and was creating a shoth. I was suspecting this and this was the solution. Thats why I did the second question

I ended up replacing the fuel pump and haven't had any problems since!
