You have to wait to the following April I believe, it is not instant on its 40th birthday from what I have read on here.

It says here  https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles

"Vehicles exempt from vehicle tax

You do not need to pay vehicle tax if your vehicle was built before 1 January 1980."

- so if your car was built 40 years ago i.e. in 1980. you need to wait until 1 January 2021

It is based on manufacture date, not registration date, if you have proof of date of manufacture and it’s Jan 1980 then you can get historic tax status, fortunately my car was registered on the 1st Jan 1980 so no more tax or MOT required

I can understand about the tax, but It will be exempt about MOT for ever?

In Spain, for cars with 25years old or more in "Historic Status" you're free of Tax but you need get the MOT every 3 years. They do not check gases and emissions, but as for the rest (lights, brakes, ... etc), you are required every three years.

Regards!

I took my v5 towards the end of April and got my historic vehicle tax sorted at the post office, a year's tax for free😀

They retained my v5 to be returned to Swansea saying I'd receive a new one in a couple of weeks with historic vehicle status. 6 weeks later no v5, should I be worried?

I have the receipt from the PO, saying v5 retained, and if I do a tax check the latest v5 issued was last year when I changed the colour, thanks in advance

Mine took 8 weeks to come through. Try giving the dvla a call to see if they have your logbook

I am guessing there are back logs still, I wouldn't be worried, just be patient.

I’m still waiting for my driving licence, thinks there’s a massive backlog at Swansea.
