Hi there,

I was looking to have some work done on my 1979 Austin Mini and wondered if anybody could recommend a good garage in the Surrey area? Work includes mechanical fixes, bodywork repairs and a respray.

Many thanks!

Personally I would look outside of your own county, as that sounds like a lot of work and I’d pick someone based on knowledge and experience, not physically the closest, and hence you are limited in Surrey.

Have a chat with Ben at Mill Road Garage, he would be my 1st choice every time, he has done a few members cars.

Minidave Automotive Repairs (@minidaves). He’s very knowledgeable and specialises in minis. He’s not in Surrey but depending where in Surrey you are he may not be that far?

Croydon Minis are in Surrey and advertise in all the Mini magazines but I have not personally used them:-

Ditto for Mill Road. Just down the A3 and a ferry ride away...

I can highly recommend Roy at RD Restorations near Redhill, who did my 1990 Cooper a few years ago, with paint arranged by him and done at TW Coachcraft nearby. He's a big Alfa fan, but don't hold that against him, as he's done lots of local minis too. I can dig out his number if you're interested.

Others I know have had good bodywork and paint done by OSC in Chessington : https://www.osc-chessington.co.uk

Marcus at Davies Panel Works in Hookwood (near Gatwick) has done plenty of great mini restorations over the years, and did some repairs for me about 6 years ago, but wasn't able to take on the restoration work for me when I approached him in late 2015. Circumstances may have changed : https://dpwworld.blogspot.com

Joe Pugh at http://joesrepairshop.co.uk/ is at Tattenham Corner on Epsom Downs and is a Saab specialist, but has a mini in the family (or did have!) so I wouldn't hesitate to talk to him about mini repair / resto work if I was in need again in the future.

So there's a few in Surrey to get you started, I'm sure others will have a few more.

I cant recommend croydon minis. I dropped mine off for an oil change and mot and i couldnt even drive it home afterwards. They screwed it all up. They fixed it quick enough though so it was in running condition again but when i got home i noticed i had little holes and metal burrs in my paint. I went back to show them and when i got there i found them in the barn out back welding under a car on the lift with another mini under it in for service. That explained my paint issues.

My car is now at Millroad where they all should go getting all sorts of work done. You can see it in the traders thread.
